French liner operator CMA CGM expects to take delivery of two 20,600 teu containships in June and September this year — the final ships from an order that comprised a trio — and will likely deploy them on the Asia to Europe trade route, vice-president and head of the Asia regional office Mathieu Girardin has said.

CMA CGM recently took delivery of the first vessel of the trio — the Antoine de Saint Exupery — which called at Singapore on Monday. The three 20,600 teu vessels were ordered in 2015 and were originally slated for delivery in 2017 but were pushed back in response to industry overcapacity.

CMA CGM has ordered even bigger ships — nine 22,000 teu vessels with liquefied natural gas-powered engines to be delivered in 2020. Whether ships will continue to become bigger, though, will depend on demand, Mr Girardin said.

He explained that the Antoine de Saint Exupery was able to deliver substantial savings by reducing fuel consumption by 25%, which lowers carbon dioxide emissions by an average of 3%. He added that the ship’s Becker Twisted Fin, a device that sits in front of the propeller to generate a pre-swirl, would cut its energy use and provide a 4% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

With the global sulphur cap due to come into effect, the company is considering its options, including installing scrubber technology or sourcing low sulphur fuels, but it has yet to make any decisions.

The three 20,600 teu vessels are being built by Hanjin Heavy Industries at its Subic yard in the Philippines.
