FDA Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP) Inspections

August 30, 2017

The NCBFAA has advised that Importers receiving an email notification from FDA can expect an FDA inspection for compliance of the new Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP) rule.  The FDA notifications will be titled "FSVP Inspection Requirements, Handouts & Law."

FDA has stressed that FSVP inspections are separate from traditional food facility inspections.  FSVP inspections will primarily encompass review of records and take place at the importer's facility.  Importers need to ensure they are documenting the necessary analyses and verification activities between them and their suppliers, for their imported food items, as evidence that FSVP procedures are being followed.

The FSVP rule requires importers to:
 * Designate a "Qualified Individual" for development of a FSVP for each imported food from each supplier
 * Monitoring of their foreign suppliers' FDA compliance
