Vilma Martinez announced that she’s stepping down as president of the Los Angeles Harbor Commission, effective Friday.
She has served on the board since 2013. The reason for her departure was not disclosed.
Meanwhile, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has named Jaime L. Lee to the harbor commission, an appointment that is expected to be taken up by the Los Angeles City Council for approval in the coming weeks. The commission’s five members serve in a voluntary capacity.
During her time with the commission, Martinez oversaw several consecutive years of record cargo growth at the Port of Los Angeles and the development and approval of the 2017 Clean Air Action Plan update. She also helped craft two five-year strategic plans for the Southern California port.
Prior to appointment to the harbor commission, she served as U.S. ambassador to Argentina for the Obama administration from 2009 to 2013. Before that, Martinez was a partner at the law firm Munger, Tolles & Olson.
