Market Letter – India and The Subcontinent

February 22, 2018

India – US Trade Lane Import Update:   The market has been experiencing space and capacity challenges ex-India since last summer and if you are importing today from Mumbai, Nhava Sheva, Tuticorin or other origins in the sub-continent, you most likely have experienced vessel delays, overbooked vessels and roll-overs since last year.

Relief is in Sight!  Starting in March, 2018, the critically important Indamex Service (Port Qasim, Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Damietta, New York, Norfolk, Savannah, Charleston, Jeddah, and back to Port Qasim) will be upgraded by its member carriers from approximately 6000 x Teus vessel per week to over 8000 x Teus vessel per week.  The core carriers on this string are Hapag-Lloyd, CMA, OOCL (owned by COSCO), and NYK (soon to be part of ONE Carrier).  This capacity increase will be welcome news as the demand for import ocean services from India and Pakistan to the United States East Coast continues to increase and we expect another strong year of demand in 2018.

US – Subcontinent Export Update:  Until this capacity increase begins to impact the US export rotations later in April, we expect the current tightness of space to both India and Pakistan to continue.  Relief for US exporters is not expected until later in early April when the larger vessels arrive on the east coast to supply capacity to US exporters.
