The Alabama State Port Authority (ASPA) and AutoMobile International Terminal have agreed to develop a roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) terminal at the Port of Mobile.

ASPA began the tender process in 2016 and AutoMobile International Terminal, a joint venture between Chile’s SAAM Puertos and Argentina’s Terminal Zárate, won the concession to operate the terminal for up to 30 years. The facility will have an annual capacity of 210,000 vehicles.

Yurik Díaz, CEO of SAAM Puertos, said: “This agreement represents an opportunity to work together with Terminal Zárate and ASPA, contributing our experience and know-how and, at the same time, continuing to consolidate our position in the region.”

Operations at the 23 ha site, which features a wharf with depth of 12.2 m and direct connections with five railroads, are scheduled to begin in late 2019.

Robert Murchison, chairman of Terminal Zárate, said: “This project will allow the Murchison Group and Terminal Zárate to continue expanding into new markets and diversifying their business matrix by partnering with SAAM to develop AutoMobile International Terminal in the State of Alabama.”
